The City Park Tennis Club was founded in 1928 by a group of men who played tennis at City Park and who decided to approach the City Park Board of Directors about leasing three courts for club use. The board approved and the club was officially organized. The late Bill Macassin was elected the first president.

Over the years, the Club has played on three different surfaces, starting on tan colored clay, red brick dust, green rubico and the present green har-tru courts. The har-tru is similar to the rubico except it is continually watered from below the surface instead of by sprinklers. (NOTE): Many of you may have noticed variances in the moisture content of the har-tru courts while maintenance is in a learning curve adjusting the water levels for optimal results. Adjusting the water levels is a slow process of trial and error that can require as much as 24+ hours between adjustments to see the results. So let us be patient since even with the variances I think most of us can agree the overall condition of the new courts are an improvement from the old courts.

RULES & PROCEDURES on COURT USE beginning July 1st, 2011.

The court schedule for Annual Pass Members (APMs) will be as follows:

Monday – Thursday;
7am through 7pm - 4 clay and 2 hard courts
7pm through 10pm – 2 clay and 2 hard courts

Friday;
7am through 7pm – 4 clay and 2 hard courts

Saturday and Sunday;
7am through noon – 6 clay and 2 hard courts
Noon through 7pm – 2 clay and 6 hard courts

After July 1, all APMs will be provided with a “swipe card” and must check in at the front desk for court assignments. Reservations are strongly recommended. City Park will have a written policy on reservations. Initially, reservations can be made up to four days in advance. At any one time, any APM may have a maximum of two reservations on the books. Reservations will be for an hour and a half (1-1/2). Based upon experience, this will be an evolving policy and City Park has encouraged constructive input. Please direct your comments and/or suggestions to a board member and the board will pass them on to the City Park Tennis Director, (Patti Todd).

At the sole discretion of the City Park Tennis Director, APMs may be assigned to non-APM courts on a limited basis as follows: (a) if the pass program courts are full and other courts are available, the APMs can request a non-program court at the front desk; (b) if a non-program court is assigned, the APM is subject to being bumped such as if the court is rented later to the public and if bumped; (c) the APM must surrender the court immediately and without complaint.

We expect this new Annual Pass Program will involve some trial and error. Graciousness and a good sense of humor will help smooth out any hiccups that will surely come to pass on everyone’s part. In particular, the CPTC is working closely with the City Park Tennis Director, (Patti Todd) and her staff to maximize the tennis experience at the South’s premier public tennis facility. The CPTC looks to represent the interests of the APMs as new tennis programs are implemented to serve the needs of the tennis public.
