W

inter weather has put a damper on Junior Club activity, but Friday continues to be prime time for junior play.  Courts are generally available and all it takes is for members to show up.  Mid-morning Saturday is still a great time for club members to use the clay courts.  When the Saturday session of NOYT gets crowded, members can check to see if club courts are available, and then go over to play.  Members using club courts on Saturday should play sets, since adult members are on adjoining courts.

Membership List Goes Out This Month

T

he membership list with the phone numbers of all members and advisors will finally go out to all paid members.  The numbers on file are those that were given on the original application.  This may include the member’s cell, home phone, or parents’ number, depending on what was included on the application.  Once the list is sent, please make whatever corrections you need to make, click “reply all” and send the information back to be recorded, and to other members.

Initiation Fee for New Applicants

A

pplicants who choose to join the club after September will have to pay an initiation fee of $25 in addition to the pro-rated portion of their annual dues.  For example, joining in October would mean 9 months at $8.33 ($75) + $25 initiation fee.  Joining in January would be 6 months at $8.33 ($50) + $25 initiation fee.  Also to join after May 15th, applicants would be asked to pay the annual fee of $100 for the next year, and would not have to pay fees for June or the initiation fee.

New Tennis Facility Scheduled to Open in March

T

he new tennis facility being constructed on Marconi Drive will have its Grand Opening on March 26, 2011.  Make plans that day to experience everything local tennis has to offer, from shop owners to manufacturer’s representatives and other tennis organizations from the metropolitan area.  NOYT plans to showcase all of its programs, including City Park Junior Tennis Club.

Club Court Assignments

U

ntil the new courts open, these are the times and courts that are reserved for club play:

Weekday mornings: Courts 30, 31, 35, 36.  Weekday afternoons: 30, 31, 32, 33.  Saturday & Sunday Morning: 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38.  Keep in mind; juniors have secondary access to the courts at all times.  When adult club members are playing, juniors have to wait.  If no other club courts are available, adults have priority and juniors have to surrender the court.

*N

ote: when club courts are full and other courts are available, City Park Tennis has allowed us to use non-club courts if they have not been rented, but there is no guarantee that this scenario will continue.  In fact the adults, by behaving badly, have, on at least one occasion, had their right to use non-club courts revoked, and had to pay to use them.  Make sure all junior members understand that being courteous and respectful will help us to enjoy the fruits of club membership and stay in the good graces of City Park Tennis management.

New Orleans Youth Tennis Announces Its 1st Annual

“Junior Tennis Sportsperson of the Year” Award

On May 13, 2011, New Orleans Youth Tennis will award a $500 educational stipend to the “Junior Tennis Sportsperson of the Year.”  An independent selection committee will choose from nominations of junior tennis players who exemplify the best ideals of sportsmanship, competitiveness, academics, and civic responsibility.  While there is only one monetary prize, we anticipate having nominees who deserve honorable mention.

The selection committee features the following community leaders: Alan Marcus Green, Head Coach of Xavier’s tennis team; Terri Sisk, Head Coach of Tulane’s Women’s tennis team; Peggy Andry (nee Moore), former Wightman Cup (now the Federation Cup for women) Captain and player; and Patti Todd, Director of City Park Tennis.

Nominations will be gathered from coaches and instructors who will submit nominations to honor their choice of players who set the best example for others to follow.  New Orleans Youth Tennis looks forward to your participation in this endeavor to honor the hard work and dedication of junior tennis players who try to do their best, on and off the court.
