LATEST NEWS AROUND THE COURTS

This page last updated: 05-May-2010 5:02 PM

All courts closed for State Tournament Friday May 21st through Sunday May 23rd.

NIGHT COURT PROGRAM

The club has rented Court 30 on Monday and Wednesday nights through August to provide additional court time for members from our normal hours (up to 6:30p.m.) till 9:00p.m. The court will be a "challenge" type format so that one group does not monopolize the court. Rules are posted outside the court.

Begins May 17th on every Monday and Wednesday night thereafter on one reserved rubico court from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, check for court assignment. Open to all CPTC members with current dues paid at no additional cost beyond club membership. Designed for a minimum wait for court play as described below plus to encourage new younger players that work all day to join CPTC.

  • Program rules will be posted on fence of reserved court
  • Doubles precedes singles
  • Racket in fence announces a member is waiting
  • Players must stop after 4th game if a member or members are waiting.
    • 4 players must spin racket to determine who sits out depending on the number of members waiting.
    • 2 players must invite a waiting member to hit and/or play 2on1 until a 4th member arrives or one drops out to rest.
  • Balancing player and team skills within a foursome is helpful for good sportsmanship and an enjoyable time for all.
  • Most other courts will be occupied by Ladies and/or Men's league play so remember your court manners, bring your own refreshments and have some fun.

Mr. Bob Becker, City Park CEO told the membership at the annual meeting Mar 24th that the new facility is on schedule and the contractor's portion is expected to be completed Nov 17th. After that, City Park has landscaping and some minor amenities to complete before it is opened to the public hopefully by the end of the year or early January 2011. Mr. Becker also stated the rumors about bathrooms not being in the back are false, the bathrooms will be there. The facility will be sponsored by PEPSI who has given City Park a grant to help offset the first three years of operation which is needed due to the cutbacks of State funds.

The new Tennis Center will probably increased its use by the public which translates into less courts available for our members unless we can increase our membership which would empower us to purchase more courts. It is up to all of us to get the word out and bring in some fresh blood if we expect to continue in the future as we have in the past. Talk to your friends about joining CPTC and let's get the membership back up to where it once was and even more.

This years Sportsmanship Award was presented to GEORGE FAY, congratulations George.

Construction on the new City Park Tennis Facility has started with a completion date of November ??, 2010.

UPDATE ON NEW TENNIS FACILITY:
Friday, June 19, 2009
Subject:: New Tennis Facility

We took a bid for the new tennis facility on June 10th. Unfortunately it was for more than we have funds for ($4.2 million against our available funding of $3.8 million). Therefore we rejected the bid and will do some redesign and packaging which our consultants believe will reduce the bid down to our available funds without damaging the project. We will also try and put in some alternates which will give us flexibility to accept a main bid but potentially do some items later on if the bid still comes in high. We expect the project to go back on the street in a couple of weeks and have a new bid in about six weeks. With any luck we will begin construction in August.

Game, Set, Match:  New Tennis Complex at City Park is a Go

The State of Louisiana has released $3.3 million in funds for the construction of a new Tennis Complex at City Park.  Construction documents for the complex have been completed and Park officials expect to put the project out to bid in the next few weeks.  Construction could begin as soon as July and is expected to last for 12 months.

The new tennis complex will feature 26 courts; 16 hard and 10 clay and will be located in Marconi Meadows just north of Popp’s Fountain.  Once the new clubhouse and tennis courts are completed, the existing courts will be closed and demolished to make way for continued improvements at the Park’s Tri-Centennial Place.

City Park CEO, Bob Becker said “We want to thank the Jindal administration for releasing the funds for the Tennis Complex.  Tennis enthusiasts who call City Park  home will soon be playing at the best courts in the metro area.
