THE OAK LEAF: October, 2009
QUARTERLLY NEWS LETTER of
The CITY PARK TENNIS CLUB

**** IN MEMORIAM ****

Richard Sasser Departed - August 29, 2009

City Park Junior Tennis Club Founded July 11,2009

The charter meeting of the City Park Junior Tennis Club was held July 11th at the Starbucks on Harrison Avenue. Eleven charter members and three adult advisors approved by-laws modeled after the by-laws of City Park Tennis Club. The membership of the junior club is diverse. Two members are in college, one of whom plays #2 for UNO's men's team. (Juniors 18 and under are eligible for membership and remain members as long as they continue as full time university students.) There are six males and five females, one of which reached the finals of the girl's 12s at Bocage in Baton Rouge this summer. Some of the members played for their school this past season, and one recently earned the status of team captain. The club was created to be able to offer juniors membership privileges without gender discrimination. Gerald Davis, who conceived of and helps administer our Adopt-A-Junior Program, explained the following points about the junior club:

It helps build the character of youth who assume leadership roles; and it makes club tennis at City Park more family-friendly, attracting adult family members who can join their kids on the courts. And since juniors have secondary privileges they can be bumped whenever adults need to use club courts, so having the junior club does not affect our current members' court access.

Yearly dues to the junior club is $100, prorated for periods of less than a year. The junior club subleases the courts in much the same way as the Women's club does, paying their rental fees to the club once a year.

Now that the junior club is operational, the Adopt-A-Junior Program of City Park Tennis Club can fulfill its promise as the charitable arm of our historic organization.

Adopt-A-Junior Program Approves 4 Females Among Five New Participants

The Adopt-A-Junior Program of City Park Tennis Club has agreed to pay the annual membership fee for five juniors to become members of the newly-created City Park Junior Tennis Club. Three of these juniors are girls who were previously approved to participate in the program in 2008, but were denied access to the women's club. The names of the new participants are as follows: Gianna St. Julien, an 11 year old who boasts a 3.5 GPA and displays an unusual talent as she begins to learn the game; Lacee Ancar, also 11, who regularly plays in the later rounds of area tournaments; Jayda Margin, 14, an Alpha Honor student at her school and one of the toughest female competitors on the tennis court; Kasii Mimms, 12, who earned the honor as captain of her school team to go along with her 3.5 GPA; and Vinay Kamineni, who's the #2 player for the University of New Orleans where he carries a 4.0 GPA. Gianna, Jayda, and Kasii were all originally approved in 2008 to participate hi the program. You may get to meet these exciting young players when they meet to play, usually on Friday afternoons and on Saturday and Sunday when most of the adults have finished their morning matches.

Wednesday, October 21st - ALL COURTS ARE CLOSED 8:00 AM -3:OOPM On Wednesday, October 21st, I have reserved the CPTC courts 30-36 (seven courts) from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm in an effort to compensate for the inconvenience.

University Tennis Center Offers Club Members Discounts

10/21 AM & All Day 10/30 thru 11/1

Gerald Davis, has secured, at a discounted rate, the use of courts for club members at University Tennis Center (UTC) for the dates above when club courts will not be available. To take advantage of this offer, call UTC at 284-3914, identify yourself as a CPTC member, and reserve your court for the time and duration you intend play. Regular rates will be discounted 50%. That means clay courts will be only $5 an hour and hard courts $4 an hour.

New Tennis Complex Construction to Begin Soon

The new tennis complex will feature 26 courts; 16 hard and 10 clay and will be located in Marconi Meadows just north of Popp's Fountain.

According to John Hopper, the park's director of development, bids came in over budget.

Architects tweaked the design, and a second set of bid proposals that came in Sept. 1 were on target. As a result, Hopper said, the park has chosen the low bidder, Pete Vicari General Contractor Inc., to build the project, (from nola.com)

Construction on the new City Park Tennis Facility has a start date of November 2, 2009 with a completion date of October 15, 2010.

The new facility will present the opportunity to boost membership, since we could arguably have the best tennis complex in the metro area.

Club Court Availability:

Rules
& Procedures on Court Use

There has been some confusion about what courts are assigned to the Club at what time, and when and how we can use vacant courts not designated as Club courts. One source of difficulty for both members and staff is when members play on undesignated courts. If the staff rents a court members are playing on, our members are obliged to surrender the courts, even in the middle of play. To avoid this unhappy state of affairs, members need to return to the procedure of registering with the pro shop before playing on non-club courts. Please refer to the schedule and court assignments below to determine when it may be necessary to notify City Park staff that you are playing on a non-club court: Weekday Mornings Courts 30, 31, 35, & 36 Weekday Afternoons 30 thru 33 Weekend Mornings 30 thru 33 & 35 thru 38 * Orleans Women's have courts 35 & 36 at all times listed above. While these are the hours Club members are guaranteed access to the courts listed above, members may play on rubico courts whenever they are available, but not after 6:30, and not when the court has been rented to the public.

*Members are urged to observe accepted standards of court etiquette to ensure that all enjoy the benefits of Club membership. This includes respecting the rights of others to play without interruption and refraining from actions others might find offensive.

*Club Ground Rules require that players observe the following when other members are waiting for a court: After a brief warm-up, players should play two sets and then relinquish the court to waiting members. Extended hitting sessions shall not interfere with other members having timely access to the courts. Members challenging the players currently on court should do so with courtesy and respect; the rules are not designed to be used to keep anyone from playing, but as a means to ensure that members get to use the courts equitably.
